Description
The Saroo Flash Cartridge is a plug-and-play solution for the Sega Saturn, designed to load software directly from a microSD card. It offers a modern alternative to optical media and provides a practical tool for developers, preservationists and retro console enthusiasts working with original Saturn hardware.
The design is open source and created by Tpunix, https://github.com/tpunix/SAROO Thanks goes to Tpunix for the development and release of this open source solution.
Compatibility note: This is not a 100% perfectly compatible device and come revisions of Sega Saturn are more compatible than others, patches and updates are being created over time by the gaming community, compatibility with commerical games sits at around 90% or more. Earlier Sega Saturn VA0 consoles with oval shaped buttons are more likely to have issues, VA1 or above consoles with oval buttons may work better, the later Saturn consoles with round buttons are the preferred and recommended model of Saturn to use with Saroo.
Once inserted into the cartridge expansion slot, Saroo enables digital loading without using the optical drive. This can help reduce wear on aging disc mechanisms and simplify access to software for legitimate testing, development or open-source projects. Saroo also includes region-free functionality, a user interface for exploring files on the SD card, and support for saving data back to the card.
For developers and hobbyists, Saroo provides a convenient workflow for loading and testing homebrew, prototypes, tools and other authorised content directly from a microSD card. It eliminates the need for repeated disc burning or drive calibration, making Saturn development and diagnostics more accessible.
For collectors and hardware enthusiasts, Saroo modernises Saturn systems by offering faster loading, reliable storage, and easier access to software while preserving the console’s original exterior. No soldering, tools, or console disassembly are required—simply insert the cartridge and prepare a compatible microSD card on your computer.

FAQ
Q: Do I need to open the console to install Saroo?
No. Saroo installs directly into the Saturn’s cartridge slot and requires no internal modification or tools.
Q: What storage does Saroo use?
Saroo uses microSD memory cards. For best performance, use a high-quality card from a reputable manufacturer.
Q: Does Saroo replace the optical drive?
It does not replace the drive physically, but the console can load software directly from the SD card once Saroo is installed, so discs are no longer required for loading authorised content.
Q: Does Saroo allow the Saturn to read discs from other regions?
It does not modify disc region behaviour. However, it allows region-free loading of authorised digital software stored on the SD card.
