The Defender Pro Series is Retro Fighters' upgrade to the original Defender, designed around drift-resistant Hall Effect analog sticks with anti-friction stick rings, dual-mode wireless (2.4GHz dongle and Bluetooth) and a 1000Hz polling rate option for low-latency play. Pressure-sensitive face buttons keep PS2-era titles that read button pressure behaving correctly, and SixAxis motion is supported on PS3.
One wireless pad covers PS1, PS2, PS3 and PS Classic, plus Switch and PC, with Switch 2 supported via Switch compatibility mode and Steam Deck and MiSTer FPGA compatible via the USB receiver or wired USB.
The Pro adds what competitive and modern players ask for: programmable back grip buttons, switchable analog or digital trigger action, improved R2 / L2 sensitivity and an enhanced D-pad. Bluetooth opens up Switch and PC pairing without a dongle taking up a port; 2.4GHz via the included receiver covers PS1, PS2, PS3, PS Classic and lower-latency play on the modern platforms.
Available to pre-order — anticipated release June 2026.

Worth it if
- You play across PS1, PS2 and PS3 and want one wireless pad that covers all three
- Your DualShock or Sixaxis sticks are drifting and you want a Hall Effect upgrade
- You're rebuilding a multi-platform retro setup that also includes Switch, Steam Deck or MiSTer
- You play PS2-era titles that read pressure-sensitive face buttons (Metal Gear Solid 2 / 3, Gran Turismo 4, Tekken 5, Shadow of the Colossus, etc.)
Probably not for you if
- Your main use is PS4 or PS5 — this controller doesn't cover those generations
- You collect OEM DualShock or SCPH controllers for original-hardware authenticity
- You want wired-only zero-latency play with no battery in the loop — Pro is wireless-first with wired USB as a secondary mode

FAQ
Does it work on the original PS1, PS2, PS3 and PS Classic?
Yes. PS1, PS2 and PS Classic via the included PS1/2 Retro Receiver into the controller port. PS3 via the USB Receiver into a console USB port.
Do I need a special adapter for PS1 or PS2 since they're not Bluetooth?
The PS1/PS2 retro receiver is included in the box. It plugs into the standard PS1 / PS2 controller port and presents the Defender Pro to the console as a wireless pad. No additional adapter needed.
How does dual-mode wireless work — when do I use 2.4GHz vs Bluetooth?
2.4GHz uses the included receivers and gives the lowest-latency wireless link. It's the path for PS1 / PS2 / PS Classic (where Bluetooth isn't an option) and the lower-latency path on Switch and PC. Bluetooth pairs the controller to Switch or PC (including Steam Deck) without using up a USB port for the dongle, useful when you're docked with limited USB or playing handheld where the dongle path isn't available.
Will it work with PS3 SixAxis motion games?
Yes, SixAxis motion control is supported on PS3. PS3 titles that use motion (Flower, Heavy Rain, Killzone tilt-aim, Lair, etc.) read motion input from the controller.
Are the face buttons pressure-sensitive — will my PS2-era games respond correctly?
Yes. Pressure-sensitive face buttons matter for a handful of PS2-era games (Metal Gear Solid 2 / 3, Gran Turismo 4, Tekken 5, Shadow of the Colossus and others), and the Defender Pro supports them. Most PS2 games don't use pressure-sensitivity, so this is the kind of feature you only notice when you specifically need it.
How do the Hall Effect sticks feel compared to original DualShock sticks?
Hall Effect sticks read position via magnetic sensors instead of a physical potentiometer that wears down. The day-to-day feel is comparable to a fresh DualShock stick — smooth motion, accurate centering — but without the slow drift-onset that potentiometer sticks develop after months of play. Anti-friction stick rings reduce the squeak and grip the rubber-on-plastic interface can develop over time.
Can I use it on the Steam Deck?
Pair via Bluetooth in Steam Deck's controller settings, plug the USB receiver in via a USB-C-to-USB-A adapter, or connect direct via the included USB-C cable for wired play.
How does it connect to a MiSTer FPGA?
Plug the USB receiver into the USB hub connected to your MiSTer, or connect direct via the USB-C cable, and the controller is recognized as a standard USB gamepad across MiSTer cores.
How do you map the programmable back buttons?
Mapping is handled on the controller via a button-combo flow shipped with the Quick Start Guide. Hold the back button you want to assign, press the face button you want it to mirror, release.
What's the warranty?
12-month warranty from Retro Fighters.
Is there anything else in the box?
Yes — Retro Fighters includes a collectible enamel pin in the Defender Pro retail box alongside the controller, both receivers, the braided USB-C cable and the Quick Start Guide. A small collector touch.
