Modding Tool Kits. FAQs
Which screwdriver opens a Game Boy?
A tri-wing Y-bit opens the outer shell on Game Boy DMG, GBC, GBA and GBA SP. A Phillips PH00 handles internal screws on most boards. The Gamebit 3.8mm bit opens Game Boy cartridges; 4.5mm covers most console shells across NES, SNES, N64 and GameCube.
JIS or Phillips for Japanese consoles?
Most Japanese consoles (Sony, Nintendo, Sega) use JIS-spec cross-head screws rather than Phillips. JIS-shaped tips engage these screws cleanly without camming out and stripping the head. A standard Phillips will work in a pinch but is more likely to chew up screws on tight or thread-locked fasteners.
What soldering iron should I start with?
A temperature-controlled iron with a fine tip is the right choice for retro mod work. The Miniware TS101 is a popular starting point, fine-tip, USB-PD or DC powered, well-supported in the modder community. Browse our soldering supplies collection for our full range and consumables.
Are plastic spudgers really necessary?
For consoles with clipped or glued shells, yes, metal pry tools scratch internal plastic and risk shorting out boards. ZedLabz stocks 3-packs of plastic prying spudgers shaped for ribbon connectors and shell seams.
