Wii U & Wii controllers. FAQs
Will Wii Remotes work on a Wii U?
Yes. The Wii U is fully backwards-compatible with Wii Remotes, Nunchucks, Classic Controllers and the Wii MotionPlus. They're required for many Wii U titles that support Wii-style motion play, and for Wii backwards-compatibility mode on the Wii U. The Wii U Pro Controller is the only Wii-U-only controller in the family.
Do Wii Remotes need a separate Motion Plus add-on?
Older Wii Remotes (the original RVL-003) need an external Motion Plus dongle that plugs into the bottom for motion-control games that require it. The newer Wii Remote Plus (RVL-036) has Motion Plus built in. Most modern third-party "Wii Remote" replacements include Motion Plus internally, check the listing to be sure.
Can I use a Wii U Pro Controller on a Switch?
No, not natively. The Wii U Pro Controller uses a different Bluetooth pairing protocol from the Switch Pro Controller and isn't recognized by the Switch out of the box. Some third-party adapters in the wider scene exist, but a direct Bluetooth pair isn't supported. For Switch use, buy a Switch Pro Controller or a Switch-compatible third-party pad.
Why is my Wii Remote not pairing?
Most often, low or dead AA batteries. Wii Remotes are sensitive to battery voltage. Fresh batteries solve most pairing issues. If new batteries don't help, the SYNC button under the battery cover may need pressing alongside the SYNC button on the console front. Persistent pairing failure can mean a worn Bluetooth module on the remote, replacement remotes are stocked.
