The Nintendo Game Boy Pocket (MGB-001) launched in 1996 as a slimmer Game Boy with a sharper monochrome LCD and runs on two AAA batteries instead of the original DMG's four AAs. It's a popular base for modding because the smaller form factor produces a more pocketable build, and the MGB has its own well-developed IPS scene. ZedLabz stocks Pocket-specific IPS kits from FunnyPlaying, replacement shells, fresh buttons, capacitor kits and the rest of the parts a Pocket build needs.
Quick picks for any Game Boy Pocket build
- If it's your first Pocket mod: a FunnyPlaying Q5 Pocket IPS kit with a fresh shell and button set, the standard Pocket modernisation. Good indoor visibility, brighter than the original screen.
- The everyday build: Pocket IPS plus a fresh shell, replacement buttons, conductive silicone membrane and a capacitor refresh, restores the unit to full reliability alongside the visual upgrade.
- The dream rig: Pocket IPS in a matching IPS-ready shell, capacitor refresh, fresh buttons and a rechargeable battery mod where stocked. The brightest, most modernised MGB-001 you can build.
The Game Boy Pocket mod ladder
- IPS screen kit: the FunnyPlaying Q5 Pocket is the most-cited Pocket IPS option. Replaces the original LCD with a bright IPS panel, giving the smaller Pocket form factor a much sharper indoor display.
- Custom shell + buttons: visual transformation. Browse shells and buttons. Pick between standard and IPS-ready shell depending on your kit.
- Capacitor refresh: MGB-001 boards are decades old; original electrolytic caps degrade with age. Common symptoms: dim screen, distorted sound, intermittent power. A capacitor kit is a low-cost preventative.
- Battery contacts and rechargeable mods: replacement battery contacts for AAA-corroded units; rechargeable battery mods where stocked.
- Audio enhancement: the most technical mod, audio amp or speaker upgrade for clearer sound. Some soldering required.

Game Boy Pocket. FAQs
What's the difference between Game Boy DMG and Game Boy Pocket?
The DMG-01 (1989) is the original chunky Game Boy running on four AAs. The Pocket / MGB-001 (1996) is a slimmer redesign with a sharper monochrome LCD running on two AAAs. They play the same Game Boy cartridges. The Pocket is more pocketable and has a noticeably better original screen than the DMG; both are popular IPS mod platforms today.
Is the Pocket IPS install harder than the DMG IPS?
The Pocket has a smaller internal area, which makes the IPS install slightly tighter than on a DMG. The same fundamental skill applies (light soldering, mechanical fit, palette controls) but plan for slightly more careful work. The product page lists the specific install steps for the kit you're buying.
Will DMG shells fit a Game Boy Pocket?
No. The Pocket has a different external form factor, button layout and screen window. Order shells listed for the MGB-001 / Game Boy Pocket specifically.
Why upgrade a Pocket at all today?
The original MGB-001 screen has its own retro charm but is still reflective and depends on ambient light. An IPS upgrade adds a backlight and selectable palettes; a fresh capacitor kit addresses ageing power and sound; a fresh shell and silicone membrane restores tactile button feel. Together they extend a unit you'd otherwise eventually shelve.
What tools do I need to mod a Game Boy Pocket?
Tri-wing Y-bit (Pocket shell screws), Phillips PH00 (internal screws), plastic pry tool, ESD tweezers. For IPS kits, capacitor refreshes and audio mods, add a temperature-controlled iron, the Miniware TS101 is a popular starting point, plus solder and quality flux.
