The original Xbox launched in 2001, ran until 2005, and is now a focus for the homebrew, modding and recap community. The most-discussed maintenance job is the clock capacitor, the OEM cap leaks with age and can damage the motherboard if left in place. ZedLabz stocks Duke and Controller S replacement parts, AV cables, fan and case parts, and capacitor kits for routine recap work.
Quick picks for any Original Xbox build
- Easy entry point: a fresh Controller S, the smaller, more comfortable later-revision pad. Often the simplest fix for a problematic original Duke.
- The crowd favorite: Controller S plus an HD AV cable, a clear picture upgrade over the bundled composite lead, no console mods needed.
- The pro choice: capacitor kit, fan replacement, optical drive belt and a fresh thermal pad, the full preservation pass for a console you plan to keep playing for years.
The Original Xbox preservation ladder
- Remove the clock capacitor: modder community consensus: address before it leaks. Remove or replace with a modern equivalent. The console will still keep time when powered on; the cap mostly maintains the clock during cold storage.
- Recap the motherboard: see capacitor kits for full board recap kits where needed. Requires a temperature-controlled iron and patience.
- Replace the fan: original fans get noisy after two decades of use. A quieter modern replacement helps thermals and noise.
- Refresh the controller: fresh thumbsticks, conductive pads or a complete replacement Duke / Controller S. Browse Xbox controllers.
- Improve video output: HD AV cables (component / RGB) are a meaningful step up from composite. HDMI mods exist in the wider modding scene; ZedLabz stocks the cable-based options.

Original Xbox. FAQs
Why does the Original Xbox clock capacitor matter?
The clock capacitor is a small surface-mount cap on the motherboard that maintains the system clock during power-off storage. Modder community consensus is that the OEM cap leaks electrolyte over time, which can corrode nearby traces. Removing or replacing it is one of the most common preventative maintenance jobs for Original Xbox preservation.
Is the Duke or Controller S better?
It's down to hand size and preference. The Duke is the original, larger pad, distinctive, but often considered too big for smaller hands. The Controller S is the later revision, smaller and lighter, with relocated Black/White buttons. Many modders keep one Duke for nostalgia and a Controller S for daily play.
Do I need to solder for Original Xbox repairs?
Soldering is needed for capacitor work and any HDMI / modchip-style mods. Cable swaps, fan replacements, controller refreshes and case work are typically screwdriver-only. Set aside an evening for any first solder job on a 20-year-old board, patience helps.
Can I improve the video output of an Original Xbox?
Yes. The console outputs component, RGB and S-Video natively via the AV port, a higher-quality cable typically improves the picture significantly over the bundled composite lead. HDMI mods exist in the wider modding scene; for cables, see our Original Xbox AV cable range.
