Why do Xbox One thumbsticks drift?
Like most modern controller sticks, the Xbox One controller uses contact-based potentiometer modules that wear with use. Over time the contacts develop a wear pattern and start reporting input even when the stick is centered (drift). A replacement stick module restores accurate input.
What tools do I need to swap an Xbox One controller stick?
A T8 Torx security bit (the controller backplate uses Torx with security pins on most revisions), a Phillips PH00 (internal frame screws), a plastic pry tool, ESD tweezers. The stick module itself is desoldered and resoldered on most Xbox One controller revisions, so a temperature-controlled iron and quality flux are needed for the actual stick replacement. Are Xbox One controllers Bluetooth?
Original launch Xbox One controllers don't support Bluetooth, they use a proprietary wireless protocol. The later "Xbox One S controller" (released alongside Xbox One S in 2016) added Bluetooth, and Xbox Series controllers continued that. If you want Bluetooth pairing to a phone, tablet or PC, check the controller revision.
Will Xbox One controllers work on Xbox Series X / S?
Yes. Xbox One controllers are forward-compatible with Xbox Series X and Series S; Microsoft kept the same controller protocol across the Xbox One and Xbox Series generations.
