The Game Boy Advance was Nintendo's 2001 reinvention of the handheld, sleeker than the GBC, backwards-compatible with original Game Boy cartridges, and host to a generation of timeless games. Decades on, the AGB-001's most-cited weakness is its dim non-backlit screen, and modern IPS kits address that effectively. ZedLabz stocks the FunnyPlaying, Hispeedido and Helder Game Tech ranges plus shells, buttons and the tools to install them.
Quick picks for any GBA build
- If it's your first GBA mod: the Hispeedido drop-in 3.0 IPS kit with a fresh shell and button set, no soldering, no cutting, fits the original screen opening. An evening's project for first-timers.
- The everyday build: Hispeedido drop-in 3.0 IPS plus a USB-C rechargeable battery (Helder 1300mAh or FunnyPlaying 1800mAh) and a transparent shell, modern brightness and modern charging without any cutting.
- The dream rig: FunnyPlaying laminated 3.0" M2 IPS in a FunnyPlaying laminated ITA-ready shell, FunnyPlaying 1800mAh USB-C battery with the matching FunnyPlaying battery cover, conductive silicone membrane refresh and artisan resin face buttons, the brightest, sharpest GBA you can build.
The GBA mod ladder, what to install in what order
- IPS screen kit: the headline mod and the most-installed GBA upgrade. Browse GBA IPS kits for Hispeedido drop-in 3.0 (no-solder, no-cut), FunnyPlaying laminated M2 and the laminated ITA TFT options.
- Custom shell, buttons and glass screen lens: visual transformation. Browse shells and buttons. Pair a laminated kit with a FunnyPlaying ITA / IPS-ready shell. The glass lens upgrade replaces the original plastic for a sharper finish.
- Rechargeable battery + USB-C: swap the two-AA sled for a Li-Po pack charged via USB-C. The FunnyPlaying 1800mAh kit is designed to pair with the matching FunnyPlaying USB-C battery cover (sold separately). The Helder 1300mAh kit needs either a pre-modified battery cover or a small cutout in the original cover, Helder publish a marking jig for the cut.
- Capacitor refresh + new speaker: replace ageing electrolytic capacitors and swap in a fresh speaker for cleaner audio output. Some soldering required, an evening's project for someone comfortable with an iron.
- Audio amp + power cleaner: the enhancement layer. Helder Game Tech FlexAmp is an audio amplifier mod that lifts volume and clarity; the Helder Power Cleaner flex ribbon is a separate capacitor mod for IPS / Li-Po noise reduction. Most technical of the GBA mods, install last for the cleanest result.

Game Boy Advance. FAQs
What mods can you do to a Game Boy Advance?
Popular GBA mods include: drop-in or laminated IPS screen kit (Hispeedido 3.0, FunnyPlaying M2 or ITA TFT), Helder Game Tech FlexAmp audio mod, Helder power cleaner flex, USB-C rechargeable battery (Helder 1300mAh or FunnyPlaying 1800mAh), custom shell, fresh face buttons and a conductive silicone membrane refresh.
Is it worth modding a GBA with an IPS screen?
For most modders, yes. The original AGB-001 screen is non-backlit, so it relies on external light and tends to wash out indoors. An IPS upgrade adds modern brightness, accurate colors, sharper pixels and selectable color palettes. Tradeoffs: shorter battery life than the original (typically 15–30% lower depending on brightness), and the install isn't reversible without keeping the original parts. If you mainly play in good light and care about maximum battery life, the original screen is still serviceable.
Which GBA IPS kit should I buy first?
For a first-time modder, the Hispeedido drop-in 3.0 IPS. No soldering, no cutting, fits the original screen opening, supports brightness and color palette modes via touch sensors. The FunnyPlaying laminated M2 produces a brighter, sharper image but needs an IPS-ready shell to fit cleanly without trimming.
Do I need to solder for GBA mods?
Not for the most common mods. Drop-in IPS, custom shells, button replacements and silicone membrane swaps typically install with just a tri-wing Y-bit screwdriver and a Phillips PH00. The Helder FlexAmp audio mod requires four solder points; USB-C battery kits typically plug in to the existing battery contacts and only need a battery cover with a USB-C cutout (the FunnyPlaying battery uses the matching FunnyPlaying cover; the Helder kit ships with a marking jig if you're cutting the original cover). The Miniware TS101 is a popular starting iron, see our soldering supplies collection for the full range.
Will GBA shells fit a Game Boy Advance SP?
No. The original GBA (AGB-001) and the GBA SP (AGS-001 / AGS-101) have different form factors, the SP is a clamshell. SP-specific shells live in our GBA SP collection.
Can I add a rechargeable battery to a GBA?
Yes. The Helder Game Tech 1300mAh and FunnyPlaying 1800mAh USB-C battery packs replace the AA sled with a Li-Po pack that charges via USB-C. The FunnyPlaying pack is designed to pair with the matching FunnyPlaying USB-C battery cover (sold separately). The Helder pack needs either a pre-modified battery cover or a small cutout in the original cover, Helder publish a marking jig for the cut. Battery life depends on screen brightness and the battery you choose.
What tools do I need to mod a GBA?
Tri-wing Y-bit screwdriver (GBA shell screws), Phillips PH00 (internal screws), plastic pry tool, ESD tweezers. For audio mods or USB-C charging mods, add a temperature-controlled iron (the Miniware TS101 is a popular choice), solder and quality flux. Browse our modding tools and soldering supplies for kits.
