Quick picks for any modder's bench
- Restocking the basics: a 5-color 28AWG hookup wire kit, a 15mm Kapton roll, a tube of ChipQuik NC191 flux and a pack of double-sided adhesive strips, covers most mid-mod restocks.
- The full bench refresh: 28AWG and 30AWG wire, both Kapton sizes (15mm and 30mm rolls), foam cushioning tape, 0.38mm SolderKing solder and a ChipQuik flux pen.
- The cleaning station: ESD-safe PCB brush, fiber glass scratch pencil, dual-head soft / abrasive brush and dropper bottles for IPA or flux remover.
Consumables selection notes
- Solder: SolderKing 0.38mm super-thin solder flows well for fine joint work. Sc100e variant also stocked.
- Kapton: the 15mm roll handles most ribbon-insulation jobs; the 30mm roll covers larger PCB sections and screen-mod insulation.
- Hookup wire: 28AWG is the modder default for most board-level wiring; 30AWG suits tighter runs (e.g. RGB mod hookups inside cramped consoles).

Modding Consumables. FAQs
What's Kapton tape used for?
Kapton (polyimide) tape is heat-resistant electrical insulation. Modders use it to insulate ribbon cables and exposed pads against shorts, and to mask off areas during reflow or hot-air rework. The 30-meter rolls last a long time on a bench.
Why use a fiber glass scratch pencil?
For removing oxidation, residue or stubborn corrosion from PCB pads and component leads before resoldering. Fibre glass bristles are abrasive enough to clean cleanly without gouging the underlying metal. Wear eye protection, fibres are sharp.
Are double-sided adhesive strips reusable?
No, single-use, intended for screen lens and touch panel installs where you need a clean, even bond around the edge of the panel. Each pack contains multiple strips for staged installs.
