You've finished a console mod and want a finishing layer that lifts it into showcase territory, veneer kits are how the modder community gets there without paint or aluminum shells. Real wood self-adhesive veneer kits from Rose Colored Gaming for Nintendo Game Boy DMG-01, GBC, GBA, GBA SP and GameCube, plus Famicom-style metallic gold and silver overlays. Themed editions including Zelda Triforce and Zelda KoroKube for the design-forward builder.
Quick picks by build aesthetic
- If it's your first veneer: a Rose Colored Gaming real wood veneer for the Game Boy DMG, self-adhesive, pre-cut to the original DMG-01 shell shape, typically the more forgiving first install.
- The everyday build: Famicom-style metallic gold veneer on a Game Boy Color, bright, retro-Japan aesthetic that pairs well with a clear or transparent shell.
- The dream rig: a Zelda Triforce or KoroKube veneer kit on a fully modded GameCube or GBA SP, full-system theme, ideal for display shelves and content shoots.
The veneer install ladder
- Clean the shell: remove dust, oils and old adhesive. Isopropyl alcohol on a lint-free cloth.
- Dry-fit the veneer: peel off a small backing corner, align to the shell, check fit before fully committing.
- Apply progressively: peel and press in sections to reduce trapped air bubbles. A plastic spudger or soft cloth works the bubbles out.
- Trim flush: most pre-cut kits sit native-fit, but a hobby blade tidies any minor seam overhang.
- Display: pair with a console display stand for a complete showcase build.
We ship globally with tracking on every order. Veneer install is typically permanent once pressed, set aside an evening and read the application steps before peeling the backing.

Veneer kits. FAQs
Are veneer kits real wood?
The Rose Colored Gaming wood veneer kits use real thin wood layers backed with self-adhesive, not printed faux-wood vinyl. The Famicom-style overlays are metallic finish vinyl rather than wood, designed to mimic the color of original Famicom hardware. Both ranges are pre-cut for the listed console shells.
Can I remove a veneer after install?
It depends on the adhesive and how long it's been installed. Recently-applied veneers can typically be peeled with care; long-installed wood veneers may leave adhesive residue or split when removed. Treat veneer install as a longer-term commitment to the shell underneath, most modders apply veneer to a replacement shell rather than the original.
Do I need to remove the buttons before applying a veneer?
Yes, typically. Pre-cut veneers are designed to wrap around button cutouts and screw holes, so most installs go more cleanly with the shell stripped down to bare plastic. Strip the buttons, screen lens and any screws first, apply the veneer, then reassemble.
Will a veneer fit over an IPS-modded shell?
Yes, the veneer covers the outer shell only and doesn't interfere with internal IPS hardware, screen lens or buttons. If the shell has been trimmed for a laminated IPS (M2, ITA), check the veneer cutouts still align with the modified bezel before peeling the backing.
Are veneers good for daily-use consoles or just display?
Both, but display use tends to keep them looking best longest. Wood veneers can pick up oils from skin contact over time and may scuff at corners with heavy handling. For a daily-use modded handheld, a clear protective lacquer or display rotation tends to extend the cosmetic lifespan.
Why bother with a veneer kit?
Veneers add a finishing aesthetic layer that paint or aluminum shells don't replicate, especially the warmth of real wood or the metallic Famicom finish. Tradeoffs: install is typically a one-way commitment, and pristine prep matters (any dust trapped under the veneer shows through). Not for everyone, but for showcase builds and display shelves they tend to lift the result noticeably.
