ZedLabz stocks Hispeedido and FunnyPlaying laminated IPS kits, FunnyPlaying IPS-ready shells, Helder Game Tech audio and battery upgrades, hinge replacements and the Robot Retro USB-C charging board.
Quick picks for any GBA SP build
- Easy entry point: the Hispeedido laminated 3.0 IPS kit for SP, no-solder drop-in, brightness and palette via touch sensors. Hispeedido design the kit to drop into the original SP shell or a Hispeedido laminated SP shell; many third-party SP shells fit too, but verify the listing before ordering.
- The crowd favorite: Hispeedido laminated IPS plus a fresh SP replacement shell of your choice (Mirror Clear, transparent or solid color), fresh A and B buttons and a Helder 800mAh replacement battery, modern brightness, OEM-feel.
- The pro choice: FunnyPlaying laminated 3.0 IPS with OSD plus the matching FunnyPlaying IPS-ready shell, Helder FlexAmp audio mod, Helder power cleaner flex and Robot Retro USB-C charging, set aside an evening; this build benefits from solder experience.
The GBA SP mod ladder
- IPS screen kit: the no-solder Hispeedido laminated 3.0 fits the original SP shell or a Hispeedido laminated SP shell; many third-party SP shells also fit, check the kit listing for confirmed-compatible shells before ordering. The FunnyPlaying laminated 3.0 with OSD adds an on-screen-display menu and pairs with the matching FunnyPlaying IPS-ready shell. Browse GBA SP IPS kits.
- Hinge replacement: original SP hinges loosen with use. Replacing the barrel hinge is a common preventative measure to keep the clamshell tight. No soldering.
- Audio amp + power cleaner: the Helder Game Tech SP FlexAmp uses four solder points and helps boost speaker output. The separate SP power cleaner flex helps reduce IPS / Li-Po noise. Both call for a fine-tip iron and flux.
- USB-C charging: the Robot Retro USB-C board replaces the original SP charging port. Requires desoldering the OEM port and soldering three pins on the new board, plus the included 3D-printed bezel. Modder consensus: intermediate-to-advanced soldering, mainly because the OEM port removal needs patience.
- Custom shell + buttons: finish with your shell of choice — the original SP shell or a confirmed-compatible third-party SP replacement shell for the Hispeedido drop-in, the matching FunnyPlaying IPS-ready shell if you went with the FunnyPlaying laminated kit. Add fresh face buttons and a complete trigger / brightness / volume slider button set.

Game Boy Advance SP. FAQs
What's the difference between AGS-001 and AGS-101?
The AGS-001 is the original SP launch model with a frontlit screen, bright sidelights, but the panel itself isn't backlit. The AGS-101 is the later revision with a true backlit panel and noticeably more vivid colors. Both share the same shell form factor, so most mods (IPS kits, shells, hinges, batteries) fit either model.
Is an IPS upgrade worth it on an AGS-101?
It depends. The AGS-101 already has a backlit screen with decent colors, and original 101 panels are getting hard to source. A modern IPS adds higher brightness, sharper pixels, palette options and outdoor visibility, at the cost of slightly shorter battery life. Many modders coming from a 101 still upgrade for the brightness and palette flexibility; if you're happy with your 101's image and want maximum battery life, the original screen still holds up.
Why upgrade a GBA SP to USB-C charging?
Convenience, mainly. You stop carrying the proprietary SP cable and charge from any USB-C cable you already own. The mod typically negotiates as a 5V USB-C device, so it works from any standard USB-C charger. The install requires desoldering the OEM port and soldering three pins on the new board, modder community feedback rates this as intermediate-to-advanced rather than beginner. If you're new to soldering, an IPS upgrade is a more forgiving first project.
How hard is the GBA SP IPS install?
The Hispeedido laminated 3.0 SP IPS is a no-solder drop-in that fits the original SP shell or a Hispeedido laminated SP shell; many third-party SP shells also fit, check the kit listing for confirmed-compatible shells before ordering. Set aside an evening for your first build. The FunnyPlaying laminated SP kit with OSD adds an optional single-wire solder for OSD menu controls; without that wire it still works. Patience helps on either kit, particularly for ribbon routing inside the SP clamshell.
Do GBA SP hinges loosen over time?
Original SP barrel hinges tend to loosen with years of opening and closing. Symptoms: the screen halves don't hold their angle, or the unit feels floppy. Replacement barrel hinges are a low-cost preventative, install requires opening the shell with a tri-wing Y-bit and a Phillips PH00, no soldering.
Can I run a Slab SP build with parts you stock?
We stock the Xipher Design Slab SP V2 button PCB, the Xipher V2 parts kit, the 34-pin FPC ribbon and shoulder trigger replacements, see our Xipher collection. The 3D-printed Slab shell itself is a separate part you'd source from the designer; the build assumes existing soldering experience.
