Quick picks by skill level
- Best for first-time modders: the tri-wing and cross-wing Phillips combo set, covers Nintendo DS, DS Lite, DSi, Game Boy and pocket consoles in one driver.
- Most popular full build: the 9-in-1 precision screwdriver and security bit kit with prying spudger, covers most retro and modern handheld jobs from one tool.
- Premium Ultimate-spec: JIS standard Phillips precision driver set plus the Gamebit 3.8/4.5mm tool plus the Xbox controller T6/T8 opening set, three tools, every common console screw covered.
The screwdriver ladder, what to own first
- Tri-wing Y-bit (Y00 / Y0): Nintendo's signature security screw across Game Boy, GBA, DS Lite and Switch Joy-Con. Typically the single most-reached-for driver in console modding.
- Phillips PH00 / JIS standard: internal screws on Game Boy boards, DS Lite mid-frame, GBA SP buttons. JIS spec tends to seat cleanly on Japanese-pattern screws and reduces the risk of cam-out.
- Gamebit 3.8mm and 4.5mm: opens NES, SNES, N64, Game Boy and Genesis cartridges and consoles. Two heads, decades of retro hardware.
- T6 / T8 Torx security: Xbox 360 and Xbox One controller screws. The combined opening set adds a pry tool for the front shell.
- Precision 9-in-1 kit: keeps a versatile bit set ready for unfamiliar consoles. See tool kits.

Screwdrivers and security bits. FAQs
What screwdriver opens a Game Boy?
A tri-wing Y00 (sometimes called Y0 or 3.8mm tri-wing). Nintendo uses tri-wing security screws on the original Game Boy DMG, GBC, GBA, GBA SP and DS Lite shells. The internal board screws are typically Phillips PH00. A combined tri-wing plus Phillips set covers a full Game Boy disassembly.
What's the difference between Phillips and JIS?
Standard Phillips and Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS) drivers look almost identical, but JIS has a slightly different angle and no rounded center point. Japanese-made consoles (most retro Nintendo, Sega and Sony hardware) use JIS-pattern screws, a JIS driver tends to seat fully and reduces cam-out, whereas a Phillips driver may strip soft screw heads on older hardware.
Do I need a Gamebit driver?
Yes, if you're opening NES, SNES, N64, Sega Genesis or original Game Boy cartridges or consoles. Nintendo and Sega used proprietary 3.8mm and 4.5mm Gamebit security screws across most retro hardware. A combined 3.8/4.5mm Gamebit driver covers the lot.
What screwdriver opens an Xbox One controller?
T8 security Torx for the outer shell screws and T6 (often non-security) for internal screws. The ZedLabz Xbox controller opening set bundles both bits with a pry tool, a one-stop kit for the Xbox 360 and Xbox One pads.
Are precision driver sets worth it over individual tools?
For most modders, yes. A 9-in-1 precision kit with magnetic handle and security bits covers tri-wing, Phillips, JIS, Gamebit and Torx in a single tool with a spudger included. Individual fixed-shaft drivers tend to give better feel for jobs you do repeatedly, so most regular modders end up owning both, a precision kit for variety, a fixed tri-wing and Phillips PH00 for daily Game Boy work.
